Northwestern Settlement Hosts Annual Thanksgiving Food Distribution for Families in Need

Chicago, IL — On Saturday, November 16, 2024, Northwestern Settlement welcomed hundreds of families to its Annual Thanksgiving Food Distribution, helping ensure that local families could celebrate the holiday season with nutritious meals and the warmth of community. The event served over 350 families, providing them with a variety of food items to create festive, home-cooked meals for Thanksgiving.

In collaboration with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Settlement distributed fresh produce, frozen proteins, pantry staples, and non-food items. With food insecurity continuing to impact many families in Chicago’s West Side neighborhoods, this annual event has become a vital part of the Settlement’s mission to support families in need throughout the holiday season.

A Community Effort to Spread Holiday Cheer

The event began at 9am with volunteers organizing the food, setting up tables, and greeting neighbors as they waited in line. Distribution began at noon, with families receiving the opportunity to choose the foods they needed through Northwestern Settlement’s “choice model” system. This system allows recipients to hand-pick their groceries, ensuring that families receive items that meet their dietary preferences and cultural traditions without being limited to pre-packaged boxes.

Among the offerings were proteins such as whole turkeys and turkey breasts, fresh produce like potatoes and sweet potatoes, and a variety of non-perishable items like macaroni and cheese, rice, beans, canned vegetables, tuna, and cake mix. In addition, families were able to select household essentials, including light bulbs, laundry detergent, and COVID tests. This thoughtful assortment of items reflects Northwestern Settlement’s commitment not only to fighting food insecurity but also to addressing the broader needs of the community.

“We are honored to be able to provide families with the resources they need to celebrate Thanksgiving and ensure that no one in our community goes hungry during the holiday season,” said Carole Wood, President & CEO of Northwestern Settlement. “This distribution event is a true testament to the power of community, and we are grateful for the support of our volunteers, staff, and partners who make this possible each year.”

Volunteer Spirit in Action

The event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the more than 60 volunteers who lent their time and energy to the cause. Volunteers, including staff, board members, and local friends of the Settlement, played a crucial role in assisting families with selecting their food items, packing groceries, and ensuring a smooth and efficient distribution process. The outpouring of community support was truly heartwarming, with volunteers working side by side to make this a memorable event for all involved.

Continued Commitment to the Community

Northwestern Settlement's Thanksgiving Food Distribution is part of a broader effort to address food insecurity and strengthen families in Chicago’s West Side. As demand for food assistance continues to rise, the Settlement remains committed to supporting local families through its food pantry, community outreach programs, and partnerships with organizations like the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This event is just one example of how Northwestern Settlement is working to create a stronger, more resilient community—one where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.

As the holiday season continues, Northwestern Settlement’s work doesn’t stop with this event. They remain dedicated to providing essential support to those in need year-round, ensuring that no one goes hungry and that all families have the opportunity to enjoy the simple joys of a holiday meal.
