On Thursday, April 27th, eighth grade Rowe Scholars had the exciting opportunity to meet Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) on a field trip to the nation’s capital. “Today, I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing students from Chicago’s Rowe Middle School,” Senator Durbin said on Twitter. “Their enthusiasm for becoming future changemakers is outstanding.” They discussed public issues like immigration and gun violence, and the Senator also gave his visitors a glimpse of life as a U.S. Senator.
The scholars were visiting Washington D.C. to learn more about civic government, the political process, and the way laws are made in the United States. They also visited the Basilica, toured the World War II and Lincoln monuments, experienced the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and ended the day with a performance at the Kennedy Center. The trip is an example of how Rowe and Northwestern Settlement are preparing young people to become tomorrow’s leaders who will tackle the challenges in their communities and their country.
